Exogeneous Variables and Stationarity

in Time Series Analysis with Python / Outside Factors and the ARIMAX Model

Before including an exogeneous variables into an ARIMAX model, would it make any difference to first make it stationary?
Does stationarity matter at all for exogeneous variables?
