Numerical vs categorical data for hierarchical clustering

in Customer Analytics in Python / Hierarchical Clustering: Background

My understanding is hierarchical clustering only really works for numerical data, due to distances, and ours is mostly categorical. Isn't this an issue?
This applies to K-means too.
