"Because all the other columns would automatically become time series...."

Why do we decide to use the dates the values were recorded on as indices, instead of any other column?

 "Because all the other columns would automatically become time series, since there is a time period attached to each value."

I can't get around that. Is it just me or this is an awkward statement ?
