Bookmarks capture the dashboard in its current state, you have the option to uncheck data meaning that any data selection will not be carried over into the bookmark (reset filters). So you can select multiple things on the dashboard and if you have the data option unchecked, Power BI will revert to the default state.

I don't really understand the utility of using buttons with slicers and bookmarks. Why we don't simply use slicers.

Slicers do completely different function compared to Bookmarks. Bookmarks are snapshots of your data in a specific condition. If you have five visuals that you want to have filtered in a specific way or organized in a specific way it is much easier to achieve with a Bookmark.
