Resolved: Course exam query: Cannot understand the solution to this question

Hi,

Kindly explain to me the solution of this question.

It gives the answer 3 min 8 seconds?

If we take the highest time in the resulting matrix (which is the same as before multiplication) it is around 32 mins and lowest is around 14 mins then the diff is about 18 minutes and not 3 mins.

What am i missing here ? Please explain.

Hi,

You misunderstood the question. You are comparing the times for different disciplines, while the question wants you to consider the 2 different triathlon runs.

The numbers in the matrix correspond to the different sports - swimming, running and cycling. However, in triathlon, your overall performance is the sum of those three - i.e., how fast you can complete all of the tasks, not just one.

So, in this case the first triathlon run would correspond to 15:23 + 30:01 +27:17 = 72:41.

The second triathlon run was completed for 14:31 + 32:16 + 29:02 = 75:49

Thus, the best performance of Charlie was when he completed the triathlon for 62 minutes and 41 seconds, while the worst performance was 75 minutes and 49 seconds.

We are interested in the difference between those two, which is 3:08

Hope this helps!

Best,
