What happens when no sample >50, and population variance is unknown, how to find the CI intervals?

In most cases you will probably end up with the same. Why?
Because as the degrees of freedom approach infinity, a t distribution approaches a normal distribution.
In any case I suggest you use the t-stat since this is the case when the pop var is unknown.
